Picasso and Van Gogh from Cultura in July
Cultura is the newly launched Arts DVD label from Revolver Entertainment which will provide an eclectic mix of art-based programming to form what is set to become one of the most collected and coveted libraries available.
Spanning the whole spectrum of visual arts and humanities, Cultura is uniquely placed to bring high quality but not highbrow programming to audiences across the board.
The first two titles from Cultura, both 2-disc sets, will be released on 4th July and are compelling and highly entertaining insights into the lives and works of Van Gogh and Picasso.
‘Vincent: The Full Story’, a three hour documentary, celebrates the life of Van Gogh, officially the world’s most popular artist. Presented by renowned Sunday Times art critic Waldemar Januszczak, the film looks at the 30 months for which Van Gogh is best known, during the time he famously cut off his ear, painted works such as the Sunflowers and committed suicide. However, Januszczak delves way beyond the usual preconceptions about this tortured genius to give a full and complete picture of the man and his art.
Award-winning biographer, John Richardson, is considered the foremost expert on Picasso in large part thanks to his personal friendship with the great artist. This makes his commentary to ‘Picasso: The Full Story’ all the more absorbing and, indeed, poignant. This is a definitive tribute to one of the most prolific and complex artists of the Twentieth Century, which not only covers his great body of work but also features interviews with his surviving relatives and friends.
Both programmes were shown on Channel 4 last year to great critical acclaim and, thanks to their accessibility, far exceeding the viewing figures previously achieved for any other television programme in a similar vein. Not only will the DVDs appeal to anybody with an interest in art, documentary lovers and those with a passion for history, but they will also make great study aids.
Both ‘Vincent: The Full Story’ and ‘Picasso: The Full Story’ will be released on July 4th 2005. Both 2-disc sets are priced at £19.99 each.
Coming next from Cultura will be two titles from the best-selling author and philosopher Alain de Botton - The Art of Travel and Status Anxiety - whose works have become part of popular book culture whilst still retaining kudos amongst the intelligentsia.
