Where has all the enjoyment gone?

Another week, another Doctor Who - but it's some of the reaction I've already seen that is bringing on my latest rant. It seems with the advent of digital television, the rise of DVD and the increasing amounts of CGI in television and film, some people have forgotten how to enjoy things without picking holes.

I've lost count of the number of times I've left the cinema hearing those around me commenting on how bad (or good on rare occasions) the special effects rather than anything to do with the story. It seems that in the MTV generation, appearance and asthetics are everything while the meat and bones that make up the story and resulting emotions are cast aside. This is even more apt with the upcoming theatrical release of Revenge of the Sith which will no doubt feature huge amounts of CGI and effects attached to a piss poor script (I am still looking forward to it though). Likewise, the latest Doctor Who episode, Father's Day, was an emotionally draining 45 minutes that not only took the series in an unexpected direction and featured the best performances so far, but already there are people complaining about how 'bad' the CGI looked. Sorry, but I didn't notice - I was too engrossed in what I was watching to give a shit.
