To Russia With Love
On 27 October C’est la Vie are releasing onto DVD for the very first time the classic British comedy drama Letter To Brezhnev. The DVD will be available to buy with a RRP of £15.99.
Originally released in cinemas in 1985, the film received universal acclaim from the media and public alike. Not only a massive hit at the box office it also proved a springboard for the careers of many of the film’s stars including Alfred Molina, Margi Clarke, Peter Firth and Alexandra Pigg.
Teresa and Elaine, two rather unworldly girls from Liverpool meet Russian sailors Sergei and Peter and fall for them in a big way. Unfortunately the sailor’s shore leave is cut short and soon they have returned to Russia. Knowing they will probably never see them again, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands and write a letter to Soviet leader Loenid Brezhnev. Against all odds, he writes back to them.
Directed by Chris Bernard and written by Frank Clarke (Margi’s brother) the film depicted the docks and seedy pubs and clubs of Liverpool as never before seen on the big screen and set the standards for British films for years to come. Its grit, energy and real affection for its subject set it apart and despite the passage of time, the regeneration of the docks and perestroika, the film still has a resonance and poignancy for today’s audiences.
There are numerous extras which appear on the DVD including cast interviews, three commentary tracks from Chris Bernard, Margi Clarke and Alexandra Pigg, a featurette entitled ‘From Liverpool with Love’ as well as biogs, a photo gallery and original trailer.
