When she dies, he seems to acquire many new friends, the perfect catch for con artists who offering him a long-lost father (Randy Quaid) or love (Alison Folland). Despite all attempts to steal his winnings, there’s a guardian angel watching over him (Bruce Dern), someone who has his own interests in Albert.
Directed by Allan Mindel, this gently comic tale treads similar territory to Northern Exposure, Fargo and Forrest Gump. Having been a producer (My Private Idaho, Bodies, Rest and Motion) and agent, this is Mindell’s directorial debut and he has assembled a quality ensemble cast. Lead actor Troy Garity made a name for himself in Bandits and Barbershop, but also appeared with his mother, Jane Fonda, in On Golden Pond. Alison Folland, the rising queen of indie cinema appearing in To Die For, Good Will Hunting and Boys Don’t Cry. Season performances come from Randy Quaid (The Last Picture Show), Bruce Dern (Family Plot; Silent Running) who has also acted with Garity’s mother in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? A quirky comedy full of warmth that will melt an icy heart.
