Garden State

My Region 1 copy of Garden State turned up yesterday and has quickly found it's way to the top of my favourite films of 2004. Anyone who enjoyed Lost In Translation will instantly like Zach Braff's directorial debut, and I'd go as far as saying this is the better of the two films. Where Lost In Translation looks at a friendship that develops out of two people being lost and alone, Garden State takes things a step further and is much more along the lines of a beautifully subtle romantic comedy.

It's a fantastic production, and this is made even more impressive given that Braff is a comparative newcomer to film. He's probably best known for his role in Scrubs, but if Garden State doesn't launch him big-time into film writing and directing then there's no justice in the world.

Braff also stars alongside Natalie Portman, in what is probably one of her best big-screen roles to date and shows that she certainly has more to her than her Star Wars performance would have you believe and I now can't wait to see her in next week's theatrical release of Mike Nichols Closer.

Definitely a DVD worth picking up. Check out Kevin's Cinema Review which sums up my feelings about the film perfectly.
