From the PR:
Javier Bardem (Academy Award® nominee, Before Night Falls) portrays Agustin Rejas, a man gradually becoming resigned to weariness in both his professional and personal lives. An idealistic lawyer-turned-police officer, Rejas is put in charge of tracking down a pack of guerrillas led by a man called Ezequiel whose trademark is to leave dead dogs tagged with ominous messages hanging from the city’s street lights. He strikes at random, sowing fear in the population of the unnamed Latin American country where the film takes place.
Rejas is a quiet man searching for an honest way to carry out the law and whose integrity is challenged by corruption in the police force and the government. He dotes on his daughter and appears to be happily married. However, when he starts to take an interest in his daughter’s dancing instructor, the elusive and beautiful Yolanda (Laura Morante, The Good Father), his time with her allows him a kind of quiet sanctuary from the violence in his life.
A gripping story of people trying to stay a step ahead of hopelessness, THE DANCER UPSTAIRS was adapted for the screen by Nicholas Shakespeare from his own novel, inspired by the hunt for Abimael Guzman, the charismatic leader of The Shining Path terrorist group in Peru in the 1980’s.
On DVD, THE DANCER UPSTAIRS contains a commentary from John Malkovich and Javier Bardem and two fascinating featurettes – ‘Journeys with John Malkovich’ and a behind the scenes documentary ‘Revealing The Dancer Upstairs’.
A story of obsession, honour and deception set against a sharply etched landscape of political upheaval and intrigue, THE DANCER UPSTAIRS is an elegantly shot film which examines the ways in which terrorism can take its toll on a nation’s self-confidence. A rare piece of filmmaking that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
