DVD: The success story continues
Warner have released a press release detailing the success story of the DVD format. It appears that there are around one and a half million DVD-ROM drives installed in computers in the UK and over 2.5 million DVD discs have been sold since the start of the year. In the first quarter of 2000 alone, DVD sales outstripped the first 11 months of 1999 and the current estimate is for there to be over a million standalone players in peoples homes by the end of the year.
In fact, more people are interested in jumping on the DVD bandwagon than onto the internet so that has to be saying something! There are now 1,600 DVD discs on sale in the UK so we're slowly catching up with the US. There are very few new releases which aren't either simultaneous with VHS rental or VHS retail and this looks set to continue despite the efforts of some studios!
