Sharp and Pioneer Gang Up
are reporting that Sharp and Pioneer are to join forces in the DVD Recorder market and release a product that is less than half the price of its closest competitor. The move, intended to increase DVD-RW's market share, will mean that players should soon be released in Japan for around 100,000 Yen ($934), bringing them well within the reach of the average consumer.
Whether or not this is a good thing could be questionable, and words such as 'cartel' and 'stifling competition' spring to mind. However, anything that can bring the price of these machines down and introduce them into the public domain can only be a good thing. Now let's just hope that we can get a single writeable format agreed.
