DTS in Region 2...

One of the apparent drawbacks of Region 2 DVD is the current lack of DTS titles - there are very few in the UK, and so far only music discs have been released in the format...

However, DTS isn't completely absent from Region 2 - on the continent, a few discs have now appeared which feature a DTS track. While many only feature foreign language DTS tracks such as the soon-to-be released German Sleepy Hollow (see DVD Debate for more information on this one), other discs even feature English DTS tracks. A recent example is the French release of Summer of Sam which, according to Brian Wescombe of UK DVD Cuts, not only features two Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, but also two DTS tracks. Another example, this time of a disc with the original language in DTS, is L'Appartment which features a French DTS soundtrack and English subtitles.

So, while we still don't have very many DTS discs it is apparent that some studios are beginning to consider the format viable in Europe and there is a good chance that if DTS discs sell well on the continent we should begin to see them appearing on UK shelves. In the meantime, you can order European discs from places such as DVD Zone 2 so if you have the hardware to take advantage of the format there is no reason why you can't experience the superior DTS audio on some Region 2 DVD releases.

A list of European DVD releases is available at the DTS web site. Be aware that if you are ordering foreign language DTS discs and are not fluent in that language then you should ensure that the disc has appropriate English subtitles - many do not.
