Playstation 2: Shortages likely!
Computer Trade Weekly are reporting that Sony have admitted that they will not be able to meet their initial pre-Christmas Playstation 2 allocation of 200,000 consoles. Current estimates put the expected number of consoles to be more like 165,000 - and while some major retailers still have not filled their allocation it is highly likely that a number of buyers will not receive their machines this year.
According to CTW, Sony are still confident of shipping their target of three million PAL machines by March 2001...
On a related note, the US launch was not entirely smooth and shortages over there resulted in many people coming away disappointed. Even worse, a surprisingly high percentage of shipped players were actually faulty and Sony will have to do a lot to regain customer satisfaction. Game sales have also been less than stellar with only three Playstation 2 launch titles entering the US top ten with three Nintendo games hogging the top three places - could this be evidence that there are too many titles appearing too early in the console's life?
