Citizen Kane Special Limited Edition
Despite its awesome reputation (if it isn't the greatest film of all time, it's certainly won more votes on that score than any other), Orson Welles' masterpiece Citizen Kane hasn't been too well served by the DVD format to date - it's not out in R1 at all, and the R2 release (which we reviewed some time ago) is pretty basic.
So it's very good news that on 23 November Paris-based distributors Editions Montparnasse are about to release a rather more special edition. Apparently a clone of the legendary Criterion laserdisc, it's presented in an oversize box along the lines of Anchor Bay's collectible tins, and features, in addition to what sounds like a much improved transfer, two documentaries (38 minutes and 10 minutes), one of which features a frame-by-frame analysis of key scenes, the other being more of a production featurette, the original trailer and a twelve-page booklet that includes original poster reproductions.
So it's not quite a feature-packed blowout on the lines of the best Criterion DVDs - but it certainly sounds like a considerable improvement on what we've had so far. For more information and a review (albeit in French) and a picture of the box, visit the dvd.fr website.
Many thanks to Wendelius for coming up with the link.
