DVD sales figures for 2000
DVD once again had an outstanding year in 2000 - over four times as many discs were sold during the last twelve months than were sold in 1999. A grand total of 16.6 million discs were bought in the UK compared to 4 million the previous year.
The best selling title was Gladiator which accounted for half-a-million sales on it's own. Both The Matrix and The Sixth Sense broke the 300,000 sales mark making them the next best selling discs.
One interesting tit-bit is that VHS sales total 98 million units - that's a 7% increase over 1999 so it appears that the analogue format still has some life left in it yet!
Lavinia Carey, director general of the British Video Association, said:
"DVD video is now clearly established as a leading format. The public love it, and more and more people are going to want it in increasing quantities. We expect 2001 to be another strong year for DVD sales and a buoyant one for the industry as a result. Thanks to Nic Adams for sending me the above information.
The continued growth of VHS sales is also heartening. Although we cannot expect this to continue for ever, it will still be a long time before DVD overtakes VHS as the main carrier for video content."
Also of interest may be the offical CIN sales chart for 2000 which looks something like this:

4. Mission Impossible 2
