Once Upon a Time in the West heads new R1 Paramount discs
Well, it looks as though I lied in my review of the Italian DVD edition - it seems that Paramount will be releasing Sergio Leone's masterpiece Once Upon a Time in the West later this year in Region 1, hopefully in an anamorphic transfer that respects the film's original aspect ratio. I think it's also safe to assume it'll be in English this time round. Sticking with the theme of classic Westerns, John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is also on the cards.
As for other upcoming Paramount R1 titles, Wonder Boys has been postponed to March in order to cash in on its possible high profile during the Oscars and other awards ceremonies, while Ordinary People has been delayed while Robert Redford finds time to record a commentary.
Star Trek fans will also be pleased to hear that both Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Director's Cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture are on course for release towards the end of the year.
There's also a possibility that restored special editions of the Friday 13th cycle will appear round about Halloween.
Annoyingly, they're keeping schtum about precise details of the most-wanted Paramount DVD titles - though it seems reasonably certain that we'll see The Godfather and its sequels before the end of the year - and it's looking increasingly likely that the Indiana Jones trilogy will see the light of a DVD player's laser in 2002...
