Paramount shoot some Western 'classics' at us
Ignoring the usual abuse of the word "classics", Paramount have announced details of three Westerns to be released on the 24th July in region 1.
Of the three films, the best is easily Don Siegel's excellent The Shootist, featuring John Wayne's heartbreaking final performance as a gunfighter dying of cancer. The disc is presented in anamorphic widescreen and features interviews with some members of the cast and crew. We also get the original theatrical trailer.
The other two films are Howard Hawks' self-indulgent but entertaining Hatari!, starring John Wayne, and the 1969 'musical' Paint Your Wagon, which continued the interesting trend of casting people who can't sing in the leading roles of big musicals. Clint Eastwood talks to the trees, Lee Marvin follows a wandering star, Jean Seberg looks depressed and I spend the entire second half in the pub. Both films are presented in anamorphic letterbox and contain the theatrical trailers.
The Shootist and Hatari! have Mono soundtracks, while Paint Your Wagon has a Dolby Surround mix.
All of the above films will retail for $29.99.
