Criterion announcements for September
have announced two additions to their catalogue, due for release on 25 September.
The Oscar-winning Closely Watched Trains (or Ostre Sledované Vlaky) tells the story of a man who follows in his father's footsteps and joins the railway company. The film won the 'Best Foreign Language Film' award in the 1968 Academy Awards. The DVD will feature a mono soundtrack along with a full frame transfer and a trailer. Retail price: $29.95.
The Shop on Main Street (or Obchod Na Korze) is another Best Foreign Language Film winner, this time in 1966. Set in Slovakia during the Second World War, the film tells the story of a man called Tono, a Nazi sympathizer who is put in charge of a sewing shop. He befriends an old Jewish woman, but as the war progresses Jews are ordered to leave their city and the man is torn between his friendship and his duty. The disc features a Dolby Digital mono soundtrack, full frame transfer and a trailer. Once again, the retail price is $29.95.
