Columbia in October
On the 9th of October Columbia launch their new SuperBits range. This new line of releases will be free of extras, with the entire disc space being used for superior anamorphic widescreen picture and Dolby Digital 5.1 and half-bit-rate DTS 5.1 audio tracks. The first five releases are Ang Lee’s acclaimed hit Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the panned Johnny Mnemonic starring Keanu Reeves, Wolfgang Petersen’s thriller Air Force One, Luc Besson’s love-it or loathe-it The Fifth Element, and lastly Robert Rodriguez’s cult favourite Desperado. How much improvement they will show in the picture and sound departments over the current releases remains to be seen.
Also coming from Columbia on the 30th of October is the comedy See No Evil, Hear No Evil, starring Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder and a pre-stardom Kevin Spacey. Retailing at $24.95, the disc is a fairly bare bones release featuring only trailers along with anamorphic widescreen and full frame transfers and English, Spanish and French 2.0 surround tracks.
