Horror Titles from Artisan
Artisan have announced three horror titles for release in October.
Released on the 23rd of October, Ginger Snaps is likely to be of the most interest. Directed by John Fawcett and starring Emily Perkins, Katharine Isabelle and Mimi Rogers, Ginger Snaps is a direct to video release in the US (besides a showing at the Los Angeles film festival), but was released at cinemas here on the 29th of June. The movie tells the tale of two death-obsessed sisters who survive an encounter with a vicious animal, only to find that one of them is beginning a slow transformation into a werewolf. This critically acclaimed horror is sadly, but perhaps unsurprisingly, receiving a less than stellar DVD release, featuring a full frame version, Dolby Digital audio (precise specification unknown), close captioning and a trailer as the lone extra. Retail price is $19.98.
Fans of the movie might like to note that there is an inexpensive R4 bare-bones version of this movie already out, which does feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer. However there have been reports of some problems with the soundtrack on the disc. There are also rumours of a Canadian R1 release featuring commentaries, but this release has yet to be confirmed.
Also released on the 23rd of October is the French horror Deep in the Woods. Directed by Lionel Delplanque, the movie’s plot does not seem to be highly original. A millionaire hires five young actors to perform “Little Red Riding Hood” at his mansion located – you guessed it – deep in the woods, where a serial killer lurks…
The DVD includes both full frame and 2.35:1 versions (no mention is made in the press release whether the picture is anamorphic or not), English and French 5.1 surround sound with optional English subtitles, a photo gallery, the theatrical trailer, cast and crew biographies and lastly, but by no means least, an audio commentary with horror film director Brian Yuzna, which leads one to suspect that he is a fan of the movie. The retail price for the disc is $24.98.
October 9th sees the release of a movie that was released as a direct-to-video title in the UK on the 11th of June, Tor Ramsey’s Children of the Living Dead starring Tom Savini. Yet another Night of the Living Dead sequel, the DVD features an anamorphic widescreen transfer, 5.1 and 2.0 English surround tracks, Spanish subtitles, director and cast commentary, a photo gallery, outtakes, cast and crew biographies and trailers. Retail is $24.98.
