Go ahead... make your day
Clint Eastwood fans should probably start to consider applying for a loan, since Warner seem intent to bankrupt us on the 20th of November when they release a whopping seven DVDs featuring the great man.
First up are all five Dirty Harry movies, available in a box set retailing at $79.95 or individually at $19.95 each. The special edition of the 1971 classic Dirty Harry replaces the current bare-bones edition (the R2 version of which was reviewed by Mike Sutton here), whilst the four sequels Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool receive their first R1 DVD releases.
All five discs will feature anamorphic widescreen transfers (Dirty Harry receives a remastered transfer) and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks. There are conflicting reports as to the exact disc contents of the Dirty Harry SE, but the latest information seems to indicate that it will include a 1971 documentary "Dirty Harry's Way," a new documentary entitled "Dirty Harry: Celebrating Thirty Years of an American Hero" and a retrospective documentary hosted by Robert Urich. More details will be posted here when they become available. Magnum Force will include a trailer and the "Hero Cop Yesterday and Today" featurette while The Enforcer will include the trailer and "Harry Callahan and Clint Eastwood: Something Special in Films" featurette. The only extras on Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool will be trailers.
The sixth title is considered by many to be one of the greatest westerns ever made: The Outlaw Josey Wales. Like Dirty Harry, the current bare-bones release (the R2 of which has been reviewed by Mike Sutton here) of The Outlaw Josey Wales will be replaced by a new special edition, which will feature an anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer, English Dolby Digital 5.1 surround audio, an introduction by Clint Eastwood, a 30-minute documentary entitled "Hell Hath No Fury" and an 8-minute "Eastwood in Action" featurette. The disc will retail at $19.95.
The seventh and final Eastwood title is Clint Eastwood: Out Of The Shadows. This new 87-minute documentary is narrated by Eastwood's Unforgiven co-star Morgan Freeman and focuses on his life and career. Retailing at $19.95, the disc will feature a full frame transfer and Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo, along with filmographies and trailers.
