Buffy Season 3: First Look
I've got a copy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 3 Boxset here for review purposes. I'll be taking a full look at all six discs over the next few days, but in the mean time I thought it was worth having a quick view to see what sort of quality we can expect from this release.
Unfortunately, I don't have the actual packaging in my hands so I can't confirm that the problems experienced with the first attempt have been fixed - according to Fox, though the chances are good. The menus on this release aren't nearly as flashy as Season 2 either - apart from a nice animated intro, the rest of the menu screens are just static. They're also 4:3 unlike the anamorphic widescreen ones from Season 2.
Now onto the picture - from first glance it appears to be a couple of rungs up from the previous boxsets. However, it's still not perfect and not a patch on the X Files boxsets we've seen so far - and they aren't that impressive. Still, flesh tones seem good. The main problem is that there's a lack of detail and the picture appears a little soft - with some minor smearing (nothing like as bad as the previous two seasons though). The sound is adequate - Dolby Digital 2.0 pro-logic. As usual, it's pretty active and clear, no major complaints.
Good news too is that it appears that the 'previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer' segments are back for this release - I've checked on the final episode and it's there so there's no reason to doubt they'll be missing from any other applicable episodes.
I'm hoping to have a review up as soon as possible - it's going to take some time to wade through all of the features and episodes here so I could be in for quite a few late nights over then next week!
