Belle, the Hunchback of Atlantis

Lots of new announcements from Buena Vista today. First is the Disney animation Atlantis: The Lost Empire. This will be released in two versions. The standard edition, priced at $29.95, includes THX-certified 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 4:3 versions, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX soundtrack, and the following extras:

  • Audio commentary with directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise

  • The deleted "Viking Prologue" scene

  • A "How to speak Atlantean" Disneypedia (huh?)

  • Virtual tours of two CG models

  • Trailer

The two-disc edition, which will cost $39.95, contains all this plus a DTS track, and these added extras:
  • A "Visual Commentary"

  • A "Whitmore Industries" industrial film

  • Five making-of/behind the scenes sections including "History", "Story and editorial", "Art direction", and "Character designs"

  • Publicity materials section including a stills gallery, trailers and TV spots

Both versions are due on 29 January.

Moving on, we have the 1956 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, featuring a restored 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, 2.0 surround sound, and only a trailer in the way of extras. $29.95, 22 January.

Finally, the same day will see the arrival of French classic Belle de Jour. Framed in 1.66:1 widescreen and featuring a French 2.0 soundtrack with optional English subtitles, the disc will contain an audio commentary with Buñuel scholar Julie Jones, and two trailers - the original trailer, and that of the 1995 reissue of the film. The price for this disc will also be $29.95.
