Criterion to re-release The 400 Blows in new partnership deal
In breaking news, the future for Criterion just looks better and better as Wellspring, formerly WinStar and Fox Lorber before that, have just signed a deal with The Criterion Collection to release editions of many titles in their library.
Wellspring's discs have ranged from good to atrocious (their infamously poor disc of Ran being a notorious example), and the news that much of their library - including the previously discontinued The 400 Blows (although no announcement as to whether the disc will be changed or improved in any way has been made) - is going to either be totally remastered (yes, including Ran) or licenced to Criterion is giddy news for DVD fans indeed.
This does mean that their discs of The Killer and Hard Boiled might yet be released again, but there is no mention at this time. The announcement does say that eight films will be released (to start with), but only six have been named, so John Woo fans could be in with a chance of seeing the highly-desired Criterion editions back on the market.
Confirmed upcoming titles from Criterion in the new partnership include Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Jules and Jim, Rainer Werner Fassbinder's The Marriage of Maria Brau and Ali: Fear Eats the Soul and Eric Rohmer's My Night at Maud’s and Claire’s Knee.

The news could easily throw outrageous Ebay prices into turmoil, so don't bid on anything just yet!
