Criterion Update - four new titles announced

Four new titles have been recently announced by the Criterion Collection.

Kon Ichikawa's classic documentary on the 1964 Olympic games Tokyo Olympiad is to be released in June in a new special edition, and will feature a new anamorphic high-definition 2.35:1 transfer, commentary by film historian Peter Cowie, liner notes by legendary sports writer George Plimpton, a complete list of winners in all events, and a symposium on Tokyo Olympiad, excerpted from the Cinematheque Ontario book Kon Ichikawa. A mono Japanese soundtrack with English subtitles will be available. The list price is $39.95.

Anthony Asquith's most British and enjoyable of classic comedies The Importance of Being Earnest recieves a new digital 1.33:1 transfer with a mono soundtrack (and optional subtitles), but only production stills and a trailer for supplements. The pain is dulled by the lower $29.95 price tag, however.

Peter Davis' awesome 1974 Vietnam War documentary Hearts and Minds gets a two-disc outing, featuring a new anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer and mono soundtrack, audio commentary by the director and an "abundant collection" of never-before-seen outtake footage on disc two. There will also be an accompanying booklet featuring multiple printed essays on the film. Retail is $39.95.

All three titles are to be released during June - exact dates will be posted as soon as they are uncovered.

Finally, Criterion have a request for fans of Jim Jarmusch. They are working on a special edition of Jim Jarmusch’s Down by Law, and we were wondering what questions you would like answered about the film. We can’t guarantee Jim will answer all (or any) of your questions on the DVD, but please do send them in to:

dbl@criterionco.com* (see below)

We will be accepting your questions through the month of April 2002. Please do not send any personal requests; they will not be answered. Please do send thoughtful and creative questions. Send as many questions as you like, but remember to include your full name, city, state and country of residence. Thanks for participating and look out for the DVD this fall!

*By sending a question to this address you agree to allow The Criterion Collection to use your full name, city, state and country of residence and the text of your question in full or edited form, in any and all media, worldwide, in perpetuity.

Not too sure about the last bit, but at least the fans can assist in the release - something that happens all too rarely.

See here for complete details and cover art of the announced releases.
