Kurosawa's Ran receives the SE treatment with a catch
Fans have waited an inordinate amount of time for a decent release of Akira Kurosawa's Ran and just when our cries have been answered it seems we have to pay $99.95 for the pleasure! It would appear that Wellspring Media and Amazon.com have teamed up to present an exclusive Limited Edition release titled The Akira Kurosawa DVD Collection, of which only 5000 will be made. For now this release is the only way to obtain the new Masterworks edition of Ran that features a new high definition, digitally remastered 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen transfer and Japanese DD5.1 Audio with English subtitles. Also present in this set is Kurosawa's final film Madadayo and the 215-minute documentary Kurosawa, both of which are available separately. Further extras for this boxset include a Ran mini-poster, four 5x7 photographs, a multi-page booklet, and the Japanese-style miniature shoji screen and certificate of authenticity.
The release date for this fine looking set is September 9th 2002. We expect the new Masterworks edition of Ran to be available sometime in 2003.
