New Kieslowski and Haneke releases in May
Artificial Eye continue to expand their impressive catalogue of world cinema DVD releases in May with Michael Haneke’s award winning The Piano Teacher and Krzysztof Kieślowski’s 10 hour masterpiece Dekalog.
Winner of the Best Actress, Best Actor and Grand Prix awards at Cannes 2001, The Piano Teacher is the latest highly successful film from Michael Haneke, the controversial writer/director of Funny Games and Code Unknown. Isabelle Huppert plays Erika Kohut, a piano teacher at the Vienna conservatory. A repressed woman in her late thirties living with her tyrannical mother, Erika leads a secret double life indulging in an illicit craving for pornography and sadomasochism. Strict and cold towards her students, her barriers come crashing down when a handsome young student Walter Klemmer (Benoît Magimel) attempts to seduce her, unleashing a previously inhibited extreme and uncontrollable desire.
The Piano Teacher is presented in anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby Digital 5.0 soundtrack and includes interviews with Michael Haneke, Isabelle Huppert and Benoît Magimel. The DVD carries an 18 certificate and is released on 27th May, priced £19.99.
May also sees the release of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s 10 hour masterpiece Dekalog. Originally conceived for Polish television, Dekalog is a series of ten hour-long films, loosely based on the Ten Commandments, exploring the lives of ordinary people living in the same Warsaw apartment complex. Believed by many to be the finest work by the director of the Three Colours Trilogy, the films touch upon the same universal themes of love, marriage, infidelity, parenthood, guilt, faith and compassion. The result is a unique and life-enhancing look at the various moral dilemmas faced by ordinary people in their daily lives. Dekalog is a consistent best-seller on VHS for Artificial Eye, and its release on DVD has been long-awaited.
Dekalog is presented on 2 double-DVD volumes, each five hours long. Volume 2 contains an exclusive Kieślowski interview A Short Film about Dekalog, filmed shortly before his death in 1996. The DVDs are presented in the original 4:3 aspect ratio with the original Dolby Digital 1.0 soundtracks. Each set has a retail price of £24.99. Look out for these in the shops on 27th May.
