Recent R1 Announcements and Updates
Buena Vista have announced The Count of Monte Cristo for release on 3rd September 2002. Recently released theatrically in the UK (review here) the R1 release will be a 2-disc affair presenting the film in Anamorphic Widescreen with English and French DD5.1 Audio tracks. Extras will consist of an Audio Commentary with Director Kevin Reynolds on disc one, while disc two will contain multiple featurettes - An Epic Reborn, The Pen of Alexandre Dumas, The Napoleonic World, and Clash of Steel, two interactive breakdowns - Sword Choreography: The Final Duel and Layer by Layer Sound Design: Edmonds Escape, Deleted Scenes and Trailers. Retail for this set is $29.95.
Columbia Tristar have David Finchers latest, Panic Room, penned in for release on 17th September as a Superbit release. This of course means the disc will feature a high quality Anamorphic Widescreen transfer with both DTS and DD5.1 English Soundtracks, but zero extra features. A Superbit Deluxe (2-disc set with extras) is expected to follow at a later date. Joining Panic Room on the 17th are two re-issues in the already mentioned Superbit Deluxe format, this time it is Snatch and The Mask of Zorro receiving the Deluxe treatment, which means they will feature a second disc containing the same extra features as the current standard releases, while the first discs will lose the Audio Commentaries found on the standard releases! Of course in both cases the film will be presented in Anamorphic Widescreen with DTS and DD5.1 English audio tracks (not much different to the standard releases then!).
Several Region 1 DVD websites have reported that New Line Cinema have moved the Blade 2 DVD release date forward from September 3rd to August 30th, but the ever-reliable The Digital Bits have now reported it has been pushed even further forward and will now debut on August 20th! Full details on the release can be found in this news article.
