Multi-region DVD to be against the law?

A number of changes to the Copyright Act have been put forward which could result in the modification of UK-bought DVD players being made illegal. However, already pressure groups are pushing hard to get the plans scrapped.

New legislation could be introduced as part of a shake-up of the current Act to make room for changes as a result of the EU Copyright Directive passed in April 2001. Of particular interest is Article 6 of the EU Copyright Directive which will make it illegal to circumvent hardware or software protection.

The Patent Office is allegedly putting together a draft to put toward parliament before changes are written to the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act.

Of course, one option is to import a player from the US to play Region 1 discs - but if you have a collection from all over the world this quickly becomes unworkable.

There is an interesting look at this on The Independent's website here.
