Grave of the Fireflies R1 and R2 Collectors Editions coming soon

Central Park Media have released the full specs for their October 10th Region 1 DVD release of Grave of the Fireflies: Collectors Series Edition. Replacing their previous and now discontinued release is this superb looking 2-disc set of director Isao Takahata's heartbreaking film that will retail at $29.95. The set weighs up like so...

Cook & Professor Haruko Taya Cook, Video Restoration Documentary, Original Japanese Theatrical Trailer, Art Gallery, U.S. Trailer

DVD-ROM Features: Script, Additional Storyboards. Art Gallery, Cast & Production Credits… and more!

Various online sources have stated that the print sourced for the film is the same as that found on the Japanese R2 release (review here) from Warner Video Japan, only this time it has the benefit of a dual layer disc so it could look even better! Here is a look at the DVD Artwork for you...

This R1 release was already looking to be the definitive version but for the die hard fans the following set is now available on French R2 DVD from distributor Kaze and could complicate matters slightly. This 2-disc Limited Edition set has the following features...

  • 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer
  • Japanese, French, German DD2.0 Stereo soundtracks
  • French and German subtitles
  • 90-minute exclusive Documentary on the Making of the film
  • Interview with director Isao Takahata
  • Image Gallery
  • Trailers
  • 32 Page Booklet
  • The original novel by Nosaka Akiyuki
Of most interest there is the 90-minute documentary and the Original Novel that the film is based upon (and will presumably be translated into the French language). Sadly as the film contains no English subtitles it is highly unlikely that any of the extra features will either, but still, this is a fine looking set.

You can order this R2 release direct from the distributor - Kaze
