Chaplin set for deluxe French release
The French editor MK2 have announced that they shall be releasing most of Chaplin's output on our favourite format. They will be starting with a 2 DVD release of The Dictator in November featuring fully restored image and sound and also a 5.1 mix (the original mono is also available). A 2001 hour-long documentary looking at Hitler and Chaplin will also be included as well as 25 minutes of colour footage of behind the scenes (filmed by Chaplin's older brother) and a deleted scene from one of Chaplin's earlier films which was in part recycled in The Dictator.
This will be available in a collector's edition (with prints, film cell and a booklet) and a standard 2-disc edition. Thankfully it looks like MK2 are returning to including English subtitles on their releases as the film and the bonuses are to be subtitled in English, Italian and French.
Given MK2's usual quality releases we can expect these to be pretty definitive editions of Chaplin's films and at a relatively reasonable price (the standard 2-disc edition is listed at 25€ on amazon.fr). For more information (albeit in French!) check out the site setup by MK2 for this release.
