Alexei Balabanov's War in November
Tartan Video have announced the UK DVD release of Alexei Balabanov's War for 22nd November 2004 priced at £19.99. A British actor, John (Ian Kelly) and his girlfriend, Margaret (Ingeborga Dapkunaite – Burnt By The Sun; Seven Years In Tibet) are captured by Chechen rebels whilst on tour in the country. They are incarcerated along with Russian Capt Medvedev who’s kept alive because he’s useful still to the tinpot warlord Gugaev. A £2m ransom is demanded but when that doesn’t happen, John is released and returns to Britain to raise the cash. On his return, Ivan is also released but is determined to go back into enemy territory. This leads into a full-scale military rescue mission by the Russian army.
War (2002) is a devastating drama about the Chechen crisis, underlying the perilous political situation which tragically still makes headline news. Criticised as a piece of nationalist warmongering, Balabanov lashes out at many targets to evoke the brutality and bloody mess of war. The explosive final act shares the gung-ho spirit of Rambo and many of Hollywood’s more jingoistic war movies which find wider audiences. There are also powerful performances from Ian Kelly (Howard’s End; Dennis Potter’s Cold Lazarus) as the determined but desperate John, and leading man Sergei Bodrov Jr (Brother, Brother 2), made all the more poignant by the fact of his untimely death on the set of his next movie. A brutal tale with contemporary resonance.
