One For The Road in November
Tartan Video have announced the UK DVD release of Chris Cooke's One For The Road for 22nd November 2004 priced at £19.99. Jimmy (Greg Chisholm) is young and ambitious, and desperate to sell his late father’s business. His alcohol problems, however, have led him to attend a rehabilitation course for drink drivers. Here he meets salesman, Paul (Rupert Procter), taxi driver Mark (Mark Devenport), and retired property tycoon Richard (Hywell Bennett). They form unexpected bonds through the workshops, but equally, Richard’s millions become a lure to the others who plot to sell him Jimmy’s ailing business and to relieve him of his wealth.
Chris Cooke’s feature debut, One For The Road, adds another distinctive voice to British cinema. Hailing from Nottingham, home town of fellow filmmaker Shane Meadows, Cooke has taken a poignant, blackly comic view on male bonding and the unreliability of friendship through drink. Shot on DV, he has assembled a stalwart cast of character actors led by Hywel Bennett (The Family Way, TV’s Shelley), and featuring Rupert Proctor (Heartlands, Notting Hill), Greg Chisholm (TV’s Holby City), Julie Legrand and Micaiah Dring (both from TV’s Footballers’ Wives). This is the wry downbeat world of The Office seen from the bottom of a pint or ten.
