Grand Theft Parsons (R2) in September
Redbus Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Grand Theft Parsons for 20th September 2004 priced at £15.99. Based on a true story. Gram Parsons was one of the most influential musicians of his time; a genius who knew Elvis and the Stones and led the Byrds. As fame and fortune came within his grasp, he died unexpectedly in 1973.
When Gram's best friend and road manager Phil Kaufman (Johnny Knoxville in his first leading role) hears the news, he gets busy to fulfil an old promise - to cremate his buddy in the majestic desert wilderness of Joshua Tree. The plan looks great but there are snags…he has to steal the body from under the noses of the authorities, then evade the police, Gram's father and an avenging ex-girlfriend, with only a stoned hippy for company and driving a psychedelic Hearse!
Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen with English DD5.1 & DTS 5.1 Surround audio mixes, the DVD features an audio commentary by the real Phil Kaufman and David Caffrey as well as director and crew interviews and a trailer.
With a fantastic supporting cast including Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Christina Applegate (Wonderland) and Michael Shannon (Pearl Harbor), Grand Theft Parsons is a classic road movie about one of the most extraordinary chases of modern times.
The film was shot in the lightning-quick time of 24 days using authentic locations in California. The production was granted permission to film in LAX where the body was actually stolen, as well as the Joshua Tree National Park where the cremation took place. In the movie, Knoxville wears the road manager's actual denim jacket he had worn when committing the bodysnatching, and Knoxville rides the road manager's actual Harley trike.
Grand Theft Parsons features a blistering soundtrack that includes Bruce Springsteen, Starsailor, Primal Scream and of course, the duets between Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris - out now on Cube Soundtracks.
