Control Room in October
Tartan Video have announced a new addition to their October line-up with the UK DVD release of Jehane Noujaim's powerful documentary Control Room, presenting the other side of the war-torn Iraq. In this era of live television coverage, we expect to see news as it happens, when it happens. During the recent Iraqi war, reporters fed back from the front line of the war-torn country but they were driven by pro-American networks. How was it seen by the Arab nation though? And did it give the full story?
Having directed the expose on the Dot.com revolution Startup.com, Jehane Noujaim’s intriguing and powerful documentary CONTROL ROOM shows the story through the eyes of the first commercial non state-run Arab satellite channel, Al-Jazeera, and reveals a very different side to the story, the human tragedy behind the politics, as she follows the fall of Baghdad to the toppling of Saddam’s statue.
Taking a peek behind the newsroom itself, she also seeks out views from Donald Rumsfeld as well as BBC journos, but also includes footage of the personal devastation inflicted on the innocent victims of the war. Whilst there is a partisan view of events, and Noujaim herself is Egyptian-American, it deftly reveals the blatant hypocrisy in American actions and the propaganda which has been passed off through our own news stations through the mouths of Western politicians themselves.
With Michael Moore’s Fahreinheit 9/11 lambasting the follies of Bush’s presidency and the Oscar-winning Fog Of War highlighting Robert McNamara’s home truths of the Vietnam War, CONTROL ROOM is proof that politics in the movies can be a powerful and provocative experience.
Arriving on 25th October 2004 priced at £19.99 Control Room features an Anamorphic Widescreen presentation with Stereo sound. Extras are limited to Trailers.
