Ozu Box Set - Delay, new films & extras
Tartan Video’s proposed Ozu Box Set has become a celebration of not only one of the world’s greatest directors, but also of one of Japan’s most acclaimed actresses and the woman who came to personify the director’s ideal of post-war Japan’s new independently-thinking female. Setsuko Hara was one of the leading actresses of her day. Her quiet beauty and measured performances created characters of emotional intensity and complexity often in conflict with family traditions.
Tartan Video’s first Ozu Box Set will feature the three films that make up ‘The Noriko Trilogy’, and which all feature Setsuku Hara in some of her most celebrated roles. Therefore, initial plans for the release have now been altered so the three titles will now be Late Spring, Early Summer, and Tokyo Story.
As a result of this decision, Tartan Video had decided to delay the release. Now scheduled for 22 November 2004, the set will feature selected scene commentaries from leading film critics including Chris Darke, Philip Strick and Geoff Andrew. The previously listed Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice will now be included in a second boxset to be released next year.
