The Yakuza Papers 5 Film Box Set in October
Home Vision Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Yakuza Papers (Battles Without Honor and Humanity) for 19th October 2004. From Kinji Fukasaku, the director of Battle Royale this series of yakuza films will debut in America on the thirtieth anniversary of the original theatrical release.
In the wake of The Bomb, ex-soldier Shozo Hirono (Bunta Sugawara) joins a Hiroshima yakuza gang—the Japanese equivalent of the Mafia—and then the shootings, slashings, betrayals, and scheming begin.
Premiering a year after The Godfather, The Yakuza Papers also broke box-office records and spawned sequels, but, in contrast, took a ruthlessly de-romanticized view of the underworld. Based on an actual gang boss' memoirs, The Yakuza Papers plunges the audience into a gritty, brutal, violent newsreel of a three-decade struggle for power of Shakespearean complexity, a nihilistic epic unlike any other.
The five volumes that make up The Yakuza Papers are included as part of a box set ($99.95) or available separately ($19.95 each). They are: Battles Without Honor and Humanity, Deadly Fight in Hiroshima, Proxy War, Police Tactics and Final Episode. Each volume boasts a new digital transfer of each film enhanced for 16x9 televisions with Japanese Mono audio, optional English subtitles, original theatrical trailers and a director filmography.
A Bonus supplemental disc found in the box set release includes the following extras:
The box set will also include a 20+ page booklet featuring essays and articles.
