Japanese Story in September (Update)
Tartan Video have announced the UK DVD release of Japanese Story for 27th September 2004 priced at £19.99. Geologist Sandy, a moping sourpuss, is given the unenviable task of looking after a staid Japanese businessman who wants to visit some mines in the outback. Neither is comfortable with the situation and cultural differences add to the rising tension. It’s more than language that’s lost in translation. When the jeep breaks down in the middle of the desert, their desperate plight helps thaw their prejudices and they start warming to each other. However, just when a romance seems imminent, a sudden and shocking event changes their relationship forever.
Sue Brooks’ haunting but human tale of romance and personal endurance has been a huge box-office success in both the UK and Australia itself. Japanese Story cleaned up at this year’s Australian Film Institute Awards, winning in best film, best director and best actress categories. It creates a similar atmosphere to earlier classics from Oz such as Picnic at Hanging Rock and Walkabout. Toni Collette (Muriel’s Wedding, The Sixth Sense, The Hours) excels as Sandy proving that she’s one of the most accomplished and versatile actresses around. An unforgettable journey that will haunt you long after the end.
