Wendy trailer: See the Beasts of the Southern Wild director's modern take on Peter Pan

Wendy (2017)
Dir: Benh Zeitlin | Cast: N/A | Writer: Benh Zeitlin

By the time his new film is released it will have been 8 years since writer-director Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild defied all expectations to secure four Oscar nominations including Best Actress (for then 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis - the youngest ever nominee) and Best Picture. Production on Wendy started in 2015 but Zeitlin has been fussing on the project for the past few years, slowing down its release. A lot has changed in that time and while another Peter Pan adaptation may not be the freshest idea, judging by the trailer it seems to evoke much of the magic that made Zeitlin's first film such a joy. Watch the Wendy trailer above to get a first look.

The classic story of Peter Pan is wildly reimagined in this ragtag epic from Benh Zeitlin, director of Beasts of The Southern Wild. Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.

Zeitlin wrote the screenplay with sister Eliza, and the cast stars Tommie Lynn Milazzo, Stephanie Lynn Wilson and Shay Walker.

Wendy opens in US cinemas on February 28, 2020, with a UK date yet to be finalised.
