What We Know About The Batman

The Batman (2021)
Dir: Matt Reeves | Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz | Writers: Ben Affleck (earlier screenplay), Bill Finger (Batman created by), Bob Kane (Batman created by), Matt Reeves (screenplay)

The Batman has had something of a tortured development having originally been a film that would star and be directed by Ben Affleck. However following weak performance of Justice League, Affleck eventually stepped down, first as director and then lead with Matt Reeves stepping in to relaunch the film.

Who will play Batman?

Robert Pattinson has been signed up to play the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Pattinson is best known for his roles in the Harry Potter series, the Twilight Saga and most recently he has gained critical acclaim for films such as The Lighthouse and High Life.

Which villains will The Batman feature?

Until 17th October the film was expected to feature Jonah Hill as either the Penguin or The Riddler - however Hill left the project and has been replaced by Paul Dano who will be playing Edward Nigma/The Riddler.

Additionally, Zoë Kravitz has been cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Kravitz had previously been in consideration for the role in the Nolan Batman trilogy and also played the character in the recent LEGO Batman films so she has plenty of experience in the role.

Update: 5th November

Recent reports suggest that Colin Farrell has been in talks to replace Jonah Hill as Penguin - this is an inspired piece of casting.

Similarly Andy Serkis is also in talks to take on the role of Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's butler.

Who else will star in The Batman?

Right now, the only other confirmed casting is Jeffrey Wright who will play Commissioner Gordon.

We expect a reasonably hight profile casting for Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred - a role which has in recent years been filled by Michael Caine in the Nolan films and Jeremy Irons in the other DCEU films. Given the full change of cast it would seem unlikely for Irons to return to the role this time around.

Will The Batman tie into the wider DCEU?

We don't know how this film will fit within the existing DCEU film universe. It could be launched as a separate series of films much like Joker was a standalone release this year.

Given the variable reception to the current DCEU films, it would seem unlikely that Matt Reeves film will be tied to existing continuity or feature any of the current other DCEU cast members.

When will The Batman be released?

The current schedule sees The Batman being released on 25th June 2021. This would seem feasible and would make the film one of Warner's Summer 2021 tentpole films.
