Drunken Monkey this month

Optimum Asia have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Drunken Monkey for 28th June 2004 with a retail price of £19.99. The first film to be released under the new Optimum Asia label is directed by and starring martial arts legend Lau Kar Leung (The 36th Chambers of Shaolin, Drunken Master 2), and hails from the famed Shaw Brothers studio marking a welcome return to the classic kung fu genre.

Lau Kar-Leung plays Wen Biao, the owner of a respectable security company. Trouble begins when he is betrayed by his ambitious younger brother Wen Bao and the film’s villain Yu Haiyang, both of whom are more interested in trafficking opium than running a legitimate business. Left for dead in a river, Wen Biao miraculously survives their murder attempt and is tracked down a year later by a couple of zealous Monkey Fist enthusiasts, Chen Jiaye (Lau Wing Kin) and Ah De (Wu Jing), who are determined to put together a definitive Monkey Fist kung fu manual. Jiaye and Ah De are led to Wen Biao by his feisty female companion Xiao Min (Yao Yao, Shannon) and, after some persuading, are tutored by Master Wen in the art of the ‘Drunken Monkey Fist’ – a form of martial arts in which the fighter must consume alcohol in the belief that it improves your fighting and makes you more resistant to pain.

Set in 1930s China, old school martial arts fans will be pleased to learn that Drunken Monkey is filmed in the style of the traditional and much loved Kung Fu action films of yore. Drunken Monkey is an entertaining combination of skilfully choreographed fight scenes, slapstick comedy and an unmissable battle between martial arts experts Lau Kar Leung and Gordon Liu (Kill Bill 2).

Presented in anamorphic widescreen with DD5.1 and DD2.0 options in both Mandarin and Cantonese languages (with optional English subtitles) the DVD will include a trailer and nothing more in terms of bonus material
