New Waves trailer: Director Trey Edward Shults’ family drama is an emotional journey
Away from the headline grabbing films making their first appearance during peak festival season like The Report, Joker and The Irishman, Trey Edward Shults third film, Waves, made, erm, big waves after debuting at Venice. His first two efforts, Krisha and It Comes At Night, were intense in different ways and the emotional depth featured in this new drama appears to follow suit. Reviews have been very strong so far and it sees him reunite with Kelvin Harrison Jr., an actor who shone in his last film, and continues to confirm his status as one of the brightest young talents around. A24 just dropped a new trailer for Waves and you can check it out above.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of South Florida, Waves traces the epic journey of a suburban African-American family – led by a well-intentioned, but domineering father – as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.
Shults also wrote the script, with the cast starring Harrison Jr., Lucas Hedges, Taylor Russell, Alexa Demie, with Renée Elise Goldsberry and Sterling K. Brown. Frank Ocean fans should also take note, as the trailer features a new song from the enigmatic singer.
Waves is set for release in the US on November 1, and in the UK on January 17, 2020.
