New Joker trailer: Joaquin Phoenix's mind is filled with negative thoughts

Joker (2019)
Dir: Todd Phillips | Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Maron, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz | Writers: Scott Silver (screenplay), Todd Phillips (screenplay)

The first trailer for the Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker film appeared as far back as 5 months ago, but anticipation is building ahead of its premiere at Venice this weekend. Todd Phillips has already been speaking about a potential sequel, with the caveat that Phoenix is up for it, although he tends to avoid doing follow-up films. So far we can see that Phoenix has dropped a lot of weight for this role and that Robert De Niro is riffing off his King of Comedy character Rupert Pupkin. First reactions will be out over the weekend, so there will be plenty of hand-wringing along with it. Given his track record, it's hard to see Phillips pulling a great film out of the bag, so a lot will depend on Phoenix's ability to make it stand or fall based on his performance. The film centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker also stars Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Dante Pereira-Olson, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais.

Joker is currently set to land in US and UK cinemas on October 4.
