Netflix set theatrical and streaming dates for The Irishman

The Irishman (2019)
Dir: Martin Scorsese | Cast: Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Robert De Niro | Writers: Charles Brandt (book), Steven Zaillian (screenplay)

A couple of weeks ago we found out that Martin Scorsese's The Irishman would be playing at the London Film Festival and Netflix have now finally announced the official theatrical and streaming release dates for the film's release.

The Irishman will appear in select cinemas on November 1, followed by a worldwide launch on Netflix on November 27. Given the standard three month window placed on theatrical releases before they can be dispersed digitally, it probably means that the opportunities to see The Irishman on the big screen will be few and far between.

The film is one of the streaming giants big hopes for this year's award season and as usual they will do just enough to meet eligibility, meaning it must have a minimum seven-day theatrical run in a Los Angeles County commercial cinema, with at least three screenings per day for paid admission. Which is not exactly a high bar to beat and means once again, the vast majority of people will not be able to see one of the year's most anticipated films on the big screen.

This is an epic saga of organized crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.

Also starring in the support cast are the likes of Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Bobby Cannavale, Stephen Graham, Ray Romano and Jim Norton.

The Irishman premières at The New York Film Festival on September 27.
