Marriage Story double trailer: Noah Baumbach gets personal with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson
In the early stages of Noah Baumbach's directorial career his 2005 film, The Squid and the Whale, saw him pick up an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in a film which drew on his parent's divorce when he was a kid. Marriage Story is about two artists whose coupledom gradually falls apart, which could also be read as a reflection on Baumbach's own divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh back in 2010. It's fair to say he understands the subject inside out, and with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in the lead roles this looks like one to keep an eye on during the awards season. Netflix just dropped two trailers for Marriage Story - one for Johansson's Nicole (above) and one for Driver's Charlie (below).
A stage director and his actor wife struggle through a grueling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes.
Baumbach usually writes his own scripts and that is once again the case here, with the supporting cast also starring Laura Dern, Ray Liotta, Merritt Wever and Alan Alda.
Marriage Story premieres at Venice in just over a week, before playing at TIFF, Telluride and the New York Film Festival. No release dates for cinema or Netflix have been announced at this point, although we do expect news on that soon.
