A Hidden Life trailer: Terrence Malick returns with a film based on real events
It's been well-documented how poorly received Terrence Malick's films have been in recent years, his change in style grating with both critics and cinema goers post-The Tree of Life. A Hidden Life is supposed to be a return to form for the legendary director, picking up largely positive reviews after it first appeared at Cannes earlier this year. Although, our own Alistair Ryder said in his review of the film: "...there’s something about the fact the film doesn’t evolve beyond its inherent message for its extensive running time that makes it something of a chore to sit through."
Gone are the big A-list stars that have populated his last few films with this being very much a smaller story. While Malick's style has proven to be hugely influential to a raft of indie filmmakers of the past decade or so, there are others who may need some convincing to try another Malick film given his recent output. The film depicts the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II.
Malick wrote the script as always, with the cast starring August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Michael Nyqvist, Matthias Schoenaerts and Bruno Ganz.
A Hidden Life opens in US cinemas on December 13 and in the UK on January 17, 2020.
