Disney are contemplating making a sequel to Aladdin

After Aladdin grossed over $1 billion worldwide at the box office, it's hardly a surprise that Disney are contemplating making a sequel to what is currently the fifth highest grossing film of 2019.

Speaking with Comic Book, producer Dan Lin said Disney were in the early stages of discussion, although given the overwhelming success of director Guy Ritchie's film, it is hard to see them not pressing ahead with a sequel. The language being used by Lin seems to indicate it is just a matter of finding the right story more than anything else:

We have now. We certainly when we first made the movie wanted to just make the best movie we could and let audiences tell us if they wanted to see more. And I would say resoundingly audiences want to see more. They've watched this movie multiple times. We have lots of fan letters about people who really go back and they bring their friends and bring their family. And so we feel like there's more story to tell. We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original Aladdin movie and not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that's been done before. We're really looking at what's been done before in the past and the home video, and there's just more story to tell with the underlying materials. So without giving away too much, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise.

As was standard for Disney back in 80s and 90s, they did roll out two more direct-to-video sequels of the animated Aladdin with Aladdin: The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves. However, these are probably long forgotten and unlikely to provide any source of inspiration for a follow-up film.

The critical reception to Aladdin wasn't exactly warm but it is far from the first film to have huge box office success while be panned by reviews. Despite the compact nature of Aladdin's story we live in an age where it is highly unlikely that a film making this sort of money is not given a sequel. Especially at Disney. So while nothing is confirmed at this point, we won't be surprised to see a sequel announced in the near future.
