Dolemite Is My Name! trailer: Eddie Murphy stars as the king of Blaxploitation

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Dir: Craig Brewer | Cast: Eddie Murphy, Keegan-Michael Key, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Wesley Snipes | Writers: Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander

Following on from recent remakes like Shaft (more a loose sequel to the 2000 reboot) and Super Fly, Dolemite Is My Name! sees Eddie Murphy take on one of Blaxploitation's famous characters, first brought to life by Rudy Ray Moore back in 1975. While Moore never cracked the mainstream, he became a hugely influential figure for a host of famous Black comedians in stand-up, TV and film, as well as impacting the style of countless rappers during the 80s to mid-90s. It's also good to see Murphy back on the screen again in a prominent role in a film that holds a lot of personal meaning to him as a performer. When Hollywood shuts him out, multi-talented Rudy Ray Moore strikes out on his own to make the 1975 blaxploitation film "Dolemite". Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy portrays real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore, a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.

Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) is directing, with the supporting cast featuring Chris Rock, Mike Epps, Snoop Dogg, Craig Robinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Luenell, Wesley Snipes, Tituss Burgess, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Dolemite Is My Name! will premiere at TIFF in September, before getting a small cinema run and wide release on Netflix before the end of the year.
