Dolittle trailer: Robert Downey Jr. talks to the animals
The party’s over for Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark on screen, but with the money he collected for the role it can keep going off screen for as long as he wants. Dolittle is the first part of RDJ trying to shake off a character that has dominated pop culture for a decade and established him at the top of the Hollywood food chain. Now instead of teaming up with universe-saving superheroes he’s surrounded by a team of yapping animals. It’s quite the come down. Not quite sure about that accent either. Watch the trailer for Dolittle above to get a first look.
After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle, famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria's England, hermits himself away behind the walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures. The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice, and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla, an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck, a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich and an upbeat polar bear and a headstrong parrot, who serves as Dolittle's most trusted advisor and confidante.
Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Gold) directs, with the likes of Jessie Buckley, Tom Holland, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Marion Cotillard, Selena Gomez, Carmen Ejogo, Rami Malek, Craig Robinson, Jim Broadbent, Octavia Spencer, Kumail Nanjiani and John Cena also starring.
Dolittle opens in US cinemas on January 17, 2020 and in the UK on January 31, 2020.
