So Long, My Son trailer: Get a first look at the Berlinale award-winner

So Long, My Son (2019)
Dir: Xiaoshuai Wang | Cast: Jiang Du, Jingjing Li, Liya Ai, Zhao-Yan Guo-Zhang | Writers: Mei Ah, Xiaoshuai Wang

Between 1979 and 2015, the one-child policy imposed by the Chinese government was designed to control the size of the population. There was a slight modification to the rule in the mid-80s and in November 2013 the rule was relaxed further, allowing families to have two children if one of the parents, rather than both, was an only child.

Director Wang Xiaoshuai's So Long, My Son (Di jiu tian chang), reflects on the damage caused to countless families by this policy in a film that saw its two leads, Wang Jingchun and Yong Mei, win awards for best actor and actress at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Xiaoshuai's film was also nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear award, eventually missing out to Nadiv Lapid's Synonymes. Judging by the trailer it looks like an emotionally devastating drama and will be getting a UK release at the end of the year. Watch the trailer for So Long, My Son above.

So Long, My Son traces the lives of two families over three decades of social, political and human upheaval in China. Following the loss of a child in a tragic accident, their paths separate. Destinies ebb and flow, and fortunes are transformed under the impact of a country's changing face. Yet even as their lives diverge, a common search for truth and reconciliation around the tragedy remains. But sometimes it can take a lifetime to say farewell. Wang Xiaoshuai's acclaimed drama chronicles people and a society in full transformation - in which human relationships and the tumultuous evolution of a nation are inevitably and inextricably intertwined.

Wang also co-wrote the script with Mei Ah, while Wang Jingchun, Yong Mei Qi Xi, Wang Yuan, Du Jiang and Ai Liya all feature in the cast.

So Long, My Son opens in UK cinemas on December 6.
