1917 (2019)
Dir: Sam Mendes | Cast: Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Teresa Mahoney | Writers: Krysty Wilson-Cairns (screenplay), Sam Mendes (screenplay)

Since leaving behind the world of James Bond after wrapping Spectre in 2015, director Sam Mendes returned to theatre work and along the way picked up another Olivier Award (his fourth) and Tony Award (second) for best director for his work on The Ferryman. His new film, 1917, is a return to cinema and sees his work with a great cast including the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong and Colin Firth. Coming a year after the centenary of Word War I, it's a drama set at the height of the war, focussed primarily on two young soldiers. The first trailer for 1917 has just arrived and you can check it out above.

At the height of the First World War, two you British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers - Blake's own brother among them.

Mendes also co-wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns and the rest of the cast features Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Daniel Mays, George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman.

1917 opens in US cinemas on December 25 and in the UK on January 10, 2020.
