Scorsese's The Irishman gets a premiere date

The Irishman (2019)
Dir: Martin Scorsese | Cast: Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Robert De Niro | Writers: Charles Brandt (book), Steven Zaillian (screenplay)

Martin Scorsese is still working hard to trying to finalise the CGI that will de-age his stars in The Irishman. However, it was announced a short while ago that his new film will open the New York Film Festival on September 27.

Two images for the film have also been released, which give us an indication of the different decades the film will be visiting. One of Scorsese's biggest concerns about the CGI being used was striking the right balance around the eyes, saying recently: “When we put them all together, it cuts back and forth... Now, it’s real. Now, I’m seeing it. Now, certain shots need more work on the eyes, need more work on exactly the same eyes from the plate shot, but the wrinkles and things have changed. Does it change the eyes at all? If that’s the case, what was in the eyes that I liked? Was it intensity? Was it gravitas? Was it threat?”

The Irishman is an adaptation of Charles Brandt’s non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, which tells the story of hitman Frank Sheeran who killed 25 people for the mob, including Jimmy Hoffa. It stars Al Pacino as Hoffa, Robert De Niro as Sheeran and Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino, with support from the likes of Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale, Stephen Graham, Ray Romano and Jim Norton.

No official release date for The Irishman has been set just yet, but it will get a small cinema run and arrive on Netflix later this year.
