Dir: Edward Watts, Waad Al-Khateab | Cast: N/A | Writer: N/A

Over the last few years there have been a number of films looking at the war in Syria. For Sama has been a hit on the festival circuit and is one of the most critically acclaimed films not only of the year, but about the subject too. It won the Golden Eye Documentary Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Grand Jury prize for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at SXSW. It is being praised for depicting a rare female perspective of war and looks set to be in the mix when it comes to awards season later this year. Watch the trailer for For Sama above.

A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as she wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.

Directed by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, For Sama will open in US cinemas on July 26 and arrive in UK cinemas on September 13, before being broadcast on Channel 4 in the autumn.
